PhotoWalk - Bedford Camera (Tulsa, OK)

It time again to kick in the PhotoWalk series since the weather is warming up and getting so nice outside. I’m sure you are as anxious as I am to get back to a positive social setting of learning, sharing and experimenting. All things perfectly suited to a casual photowalk event.

Bedford Camera and Video (Tulsa) 2nd Thursday Photowalk schedule is back in swing and our first is April 8 2021, 7pm-9pm on the WEST side of the Jenks Pedestrian Bridge. Check out the map below for the red circle camera icon for the meeting place before a short walk to explore the area.

In the “Small Flash - Big Light” series, we will work with the smaller camera fashion strobes and gels to create different dramatic portraits of our models. You are welcome to bring your flash system, I will be featuring the complete line of Westcott FJ Series lights and available to answer any questions. These powerful, rugged battery powered lights have a universal trigger system that will work with almost any camera. If our favorite muse, Shiann, doesn’t make an appearance, I bet the resident Fujifilm photographer and model, Tori, will be happy to set into the light. Either way, it will be a blast and you don’t want to miss the first FotoWalk of the season.

Maybe I will break out some fire as the skylight becomes darker around 8 pm and see what images we can create.

If you have any questions, be sure to stop by and see the folks over at the Bedford Camera & Video store in Tulsa, OK. Be sure to signup and follow the Bedford Camera Meetup Group for other exciting social and educational events.

After the event, I encourage participants to upload and share their images to the Flickr Group created for these events - Bedford Camera Tulsa Photography Group. This make it very easy for the models to get copies of the images taken and a great place for online social interactions.

See you soon!

Robert playing around during a Bedford Camera & Video PhotoWalk

Photography as a whole has advanced to a point of universal social status and capturing visuals everyday is a routine occurrence. The history of the world has never been so vastly documented and we are bombarded daily from multiple sources with the imagery of daily lives. Inexpensive camera systems are capable of “professional” quality images and, with a simple photo kit, everyone can be the “next top professional photographer” and easily earn thousands of dollars shooting weddings, portraits or seniors. Despite all the advances in the craft, professionals complain that the “Uncle Bobs” of the world are eroding the market; that my bride from last year is now a wedding shooter or the fauxtographers have no ethics. Online photo communities, smart phone apps and internet video streaming are the new age instructors for the “going pro” newbie shooter.

Today’s professional status is little more than ability to purchase a fancy camera, have a business card and a simple website. Photography is the new pyramid scheme. Fear not, Robert is here! Part humorist, part educator and all passion, Robert hopes to open your mind to other possibilities. Within the program, you may feel different emotions from anger to joy, from laugher to sorrow, from fear to courage. Robert has compressed many of today’s issues faced by professionals into “Faux to Pro - Ten Things to Know NOW”. Designed to help emerging photographers understand the creative/business process is not so black & white or easy, while pushing the boundaries of established practices of the long term professional photographer. Traditional and avant-garde styles can coexist and excel.

You will not agree with every thing presented, but Robert hopes that each point challenges the perspectives used to gauge our industry, other photographers and ultimately ourselves.

Hecklers and non-believers will have special reserved seating towards the back. Fruit may be provided.

Location of meetings are inside the Aloft Hotel on the 6th Floor conference area. Join us for dinner at 5:00 pm on the first floor restaurant & bar.

Basic Camera Controls

  • 1633 West Main Street Oklahoma City, OK, 73106 (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Metro Professional Photographers Association asked me to lead a class for new photographers to get a handle on their cameras. I've been teaching Basic Camera Controls for many years and this class is designed to get you running producing better images right away.

We will discuss the top three ways to control exposure in the camera and the very elusive FORTH control that so many struggle with daily. From choosing your ISO setting to "guessing" the best shutter speed to use for an object in motion or bring attention to a subject using depth of field, this class will cover it all.

While the class is geared towards first time dSLR or mirrorless camera users, many different skill level photographers can always benefit from a refresher course on the basics.

Bring your camera, enthusiasm, questions, and favorite dance moves. Skeptics and hecklers encouraged to attend in back of room. Fruit may be provided.

Location will be held at The Light Box Studio on Main St in Oklahoma City, OK

FOTOWALK - OKC

Join me and others on an event of LiGHT and SHADOWS on September 20th from 7pm - 9pm. This replaces the ever popular Bedford Camera & Video 3rd Thursday PhotoWalk for September 17th this month. Bring your camera, tripod and lights to experiment in the art installation created by Jen Lewin at Campbell Art Park in Oklahoma City.

We are bringing out the new Westcott FJ400 and Rapid Box Switch Octo-M to add fabulous light to the models with it’s universal trigger FJ-X2m

Here is an excerpt from the website of Oklahoma Contemporary:

Aqueous, an interactive light installation, now winds through Campbell Art Park as part of our inaugural Bright Golden Haze exhibition. During the day, Aqueous’ surface will reflect the sky, audience and surrounding environment. At night, Aqueous will engage visitors as they walk along its surface -- lighting up as they step, dance or play along the pathway. Visitors will be asked to socially distance as they explore the space.

Jen Lewin combines her studies in engineering, computer programming, dance, music and film to create public artworks that engage the body and the senses. Her works have been featured at a variety of events, including the Istanbul Light Festival, Vivid Sydney 2014 and 2018, iLight Marina Bay, Signal Fest and Burning Man; art biennales in Denver, Colorado and Gwangju, South Korea; and solo exhibitions across the United States and in Mexico, Portugal and England. Lewin has designed and installed permanent public interactive sculptures worldwide, including the Sidewalk Harp in Minneapolis; Magical Harp in Palo Alto, Calif.; Promenade in Denver, Colo.; and Ascent in Coral Springs, Fla.

Fashion Cookbook Shoot with KH Couture in OKC

Welcome to another opportunity to shoot, network, and share experiences with other photographers!

Bedford Camera & Video in Tulsa organizes a FREE Photowalk the 2nd Thursday of each month. These photo walks range in locations, themes, and styles but is always to photographers of all skill levels. It’s a great time to learn and practice techniques. The local store staff and/or influencers are available to answer all your questions and even let you try out some equipment.

This month, we dust out the earthly slumber of recent challenges to soar to the skies. We are encouraging our modeling talent to dress in a SPACE or ALIEN theme outfits. We are hoping for an “out of this world” experience and will use the fabulous BOK Center as a backdrop. The silver reflective building wrap and high glass roofing can add to the flair of this theme.

Robert Trawick will be leading the PHOTO STAY around the half-block front part of the BOK Center showing you how to add flash on location to create some pop and color to your images. The newly released Westcott FJ400 lights will be on set to try with their UNIVERSAL trigger that works seamlessly with 7 different camera makers.

created with the new FJ Westcott FJ400 lights

Somewhere in the darkness, a shadowy figure walks softy through the gritty back alleys of Automobile Alley. A shiny backlight glimmering across a puddle catches his attention with the neon colors dancing with the vibrations in the water. Click, Click, Click, and a few seconds later... a single flash is deployed and waiting to reveal details of the subject. Before the next stoplight cycles, our superhero has staked out the perfect advantage point and locked down the tripod. Carefully taking aim, a single “POP” is seen. The image burned into his mind. Two more high pitched charging sounds followed by the loud flash pop and the moment is over. The gear is wrapped amidst quiet accolades of another successful visual creation.

Robert is taking you “back to the basics” of creative street photography with one flash. We will show how to choose your gear, set up on location, nail the exposure, and create drama in your images. This class is up close, personal, and hands-on. Everyone SHOOTS! Tonight we are all Night Rangers!

We start with a quick review of the basics needed for this style of street photography. When we talk basics, we are talking about ONE - One camera, One lens, One flash, One light stand, One tripod. We will show you a few extra modifiers to change your light spread.

Robert will demonstrate how to set up the shot and walk you through the camera settings and flash setup that will get you dramatic results from the first frame. Most importantly - where to set up your light stand and what power setting for your flash.

Then when your brain is almost ready to explode, Robert will demonstrate his secret “light- splitting” technique that will push you over the edge. Rock your next alley session with this unpublished light trick for extra dimension.

Junior Rangers are encouraged to bring a tripod with their camera kits. Any questions can be directed to Robert via email

Robert will stay afterward to help everyone with their creation. After that, he will turn back into a shadowy figure and drift away. Join us for this visually intensive hands-on class and never be afraid of the dark again

Great light surrounds you. The subject is perfect. The moment is right. Your mind tingles with anticipation. Click! ... dark. Click! ... too light. Click! ...still too light. Click! ...why is this too dark now? I just changed everything. @#%&!!!! And the moment is gone forever.

Your camera is just a dumb box... OK, maybe an expensive dumb box that is useless without fully understanding the inverse relationship of the three exposure controls along with proper metering. Yes, you read that right.

METERING

You know, the little lights that flicker back and forth inside the viewfinder along some scale you don't remember. The internal camera guide that is never right. Yeah, the one you don't really use cause "I'm a pro and we only shoot in manual.”

Let Robert help you XPerience Exposure through the right use of ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed while understanding what the meter is really telling you. Learn the camera meter's sole purpose in life, as well as the handheld twin with its own unique functions.

Register now for this fun, casual and information-packed program. Bring your enthusiasm, questions, and favorite dance moves. Skeptics and hecklers encouraged to attend with special seating in the back of the room. Fruit may be provided

PS: for the "professionals" that only shoot in manual mode... Why do professional cameras have program, aperture priority, and shutter priority modes? Please sign the petition in the back of the room to demand a refund from camera manufacturers for superfluous (aka useless) controls on our professional cameras.

FOTOWALK - TULSA, OK

FotoWalk image taken during a September event in Tulsa, OK

Welcome to 2020 and we hope you are getting all in FOCUS this year. The weather has been unseasonably warm for winter and we are hoping it holds out all the way to summer. It’s time to get outside, network and shoot something.

Starting off our Fotowalk series in Tulsa, Oklahoma is very fitting since the downtown area is so diverse, it lends itself to so many opportunities for a great shot. And many times, you just need a reason to go there and why not bring along some friends.

We are going to try something a little different this trip and we might call it a “Sit & Shoot” since we are not going to plan a route around the city landmarks, but choose a cool place and use that as the base of operation. If you feel like exploring more of the area, you are welcome to travel on your own or maybe with a newly discovered friend.

Big shout-out to our resident photo-nurse, Karen Hays, for the idea of bringing a couch to the Fotowalk. She will be providing a black velvet settee transported by the Wild Bison man himself, Ken Martin. We will need some strong men to lift it from the truck and place it for the shoot. That’s where Robert Lake comes in handy along with helping with some bottled water for attendees. Robert, Bedford Camera & Video manager, will be on-site to help with camera questions and local folklore. I would advise you to stop by the store before 6 pm (closing time) to pick up any last-minute gear tips or equipment.

We will have 3-4 models to choose from for your couch shoot and will be sharing their information closer to the date.

The main character for our “Sit & Shoot” is the Richmond Settee from LA Vintage.

Join us for a 90-minute urban exploration walk in Downtown Tulsa and participate in a shortened version of the Sekonic Meter Challenge.  On this FotoWalk, we ask everyone to shoot with a “normal” view lens - 50mm for full-frame & 35mm for crop cameras - and to cover up (or turn off) the image review.  On the walk, we will rely on the camera’s internal meter or the more accurate handheld incident light meter.  Adding to the fun and the learning experience, we encourage participants to shoot in JPG for easy post-process review.

Not exactly sure how to check light luminosity with your meter?  We got your covered with an hour presentation with Robert Trawick, resident Bedford Camera & Video Envoy, on the practical use of light meters both in-camera and external.  Don’t have a light meter… Use “Rob4Bedfords” for special pricing on Sekonic meters and thousands of other products.

Teaching a lighting class at Bedford Camera PhotoCon in 2017

CREATIVE KITCHEN PORTRAITS

Photography is all about LIGHT and this workshop is all about the fundamentals of that elusive formula.  Robert will stir you up with the FIVE properties of light and how to beat them - including the sun.  Then we will sprinkle in the simple way to understand different light meters and why they are always correct, but you don’t like the answer.  And top it off with the ONLY difference between natural light and flash that is easy to overcome.

So interesting so far?  Hang on… it’s gets crazy about halfway through the program.  Robert will LIVE shoot with unique light modifiers found in your kitchen.  Yes, YOUR kitchen.  You are encouraged to bring whatever kitchen utensil, mixing bowl, pots, pans, plates, cups, appliances, etc. available to be part of this unique portrait.  We will use those items to create dramatic lighting, as well, as possible props for the models.

Register now for this fun, casual and information packed program. Bring your enthusiasm, questions, and favorite dance moves. Skeptics and hecklers encouraged to attend with special seating in back of room. Fruit may be provided.

FOTOWALK - TULSA, OK

We will be attending the Bedford Camera & Video Fujifilm Demo Day in Tulsa, OK and decided to hang out in town afterwards for an evening of fun shooting. On this FotoWalk, you won’t have to travel far from the parking lot to get into the action. We hope that Jamison Ford from Fujifilm will be able to join us, so be sure to remind him when you visit the demo counter.

We will meet in the parking lot of The River Skatepark and then take over a ramp, jump or rail for action photography with stop action flash. We are putting a call out for skaters to come out for stunts or just stand for portraits. If you prefer to see life from the other side of the lens, bring your board and we are sure to get you in front of the cameras!

The weather forecast is for a chilly - 46 degrees - and breezy evening so dress appropriately but Hawaiian shorts and shorts will sure to gain favor with the other photographers.
